These basalts are called E- or P-MORBs (E for enriched and P for Feathers) as opposed to normal MORBs (N-MORBs). They have higher concentrations of light rare earth elements and other incompatible elements, and are also higher 87Sr / 86Sr ratios. . The Patagonia region, to the south of the South American continent, has always been considered an exotic block / fragment in relation to the Brazilian platform, varying enormously from tectonic conception. . Recently, two blocks have been distinguished for the composition of Patagonia: the Somun Cura block (to the north) and the Deseado block (more to the south), with an interaction between them with subduction of the Lower Paleozoic. . This compound block interacted with the South American platform in the Permian (forming then "Sierra de la Ventania", Serra do Cabo), and always had a complex geology, due to the active deformations of the Andean evolution (to the west) and the margin continental Atlantic (to the east). .
