Young. Handsome. Smart. Beautiful. Privileged. I grew up small town. I mean, really small town. The kind of town where you bike to Brownies and stop off at the local pizza joint for a soda on the way home. The kind where your feet callous from walking down the road to the pond barefoot, sweaty faced and full of Summer. The kind of small town where exposure to different people is limited to the colour of hair. I went to my first two schools in this small town. The bus ride was as short as the cultural exposure. Every face that looked back at me in the hallway reflected my own, perhaps a different shade as the sun kissed our skin just slightly different – but here we were. When I went to university I was nervous about looking ignorant – because for all intents and purposes, I was. I hadn't pushed myself to learn more about different races, different people. I, unintentionally, kept my circle to be the same faces that resembled mine because I became so worried about saying or doing the wrong thing that I let it stop me from growing. It took 30 years, two children and a world who is also waking up to learn just how little we know about BIPOC struggle for it to smack me clean in the face: I am part of the problem. And I'm about to make my boy's part of the issue as well. Young. Handsome. Smart. Beautiful. Privileged. They are the complete definition of white privilege. And I can't let them walk around enjoying their white privilege in their ignorance. I can't let their circle of friends reflect their own faces because I choose to just gloss over the issues with them. It is up to me to do better for my boys. Small town, big town, cultural exposure or not I've learned this week that you do the work regardless. Do. The. Work. Talk about it, all of it. See the differences, honor them. Answer the questions. ♥️ . . . . . . . . . . . #mamalife #petitjoys #MyLifeIsComplete #watchthemgrow #letthemplay #ottawalife #flashesofdelight #momdotme #lifecloseup #thecuriouschild #mamarazzisquare #dobetterteachbetter # cultivatemotherhood #OurEverydayMoments #joyfulmotherhood #acupofmotherhood #childled #celebratechildhood #MotherhoodInspired #mindfulmamas #ottawamother

Going into the weekend with my squad like... Well not really because we are still in isolation, and well I don’t have a squad because I’m in my late 30’s. Also are we still using “squad?” 🤔 Have a great weekend everyone! . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . #goslings #goslingsofinstagram #canadageese #thankyoucanada #tourcanada #igerscanada #becausecanada #imagesofcanada #igcanada #ontariocanad #explorecanada #travelcanada #myottawa #ottawaphoto #ottawatourism #igersottawa #exploreottawa #ottawaphotography #narcityottawa #facesottawa #ottawalife #ottawaforyou #ottawaobsessed #ottawasworld #dailyhiveottawa #cbcottawa #insidecanada #discoverON #canadaphotolovers
