Some birdy trust building and fun exercises yesterday! I was so proud of Nacho! Our feathered friends show a lot of trust in us when they are willing to walk through a tunnel or something they can’t see out of. Nacho trusts that I’m not going to hurt him and trusts that I always do end up giving him a treat. Nonetheless, this took a LOT of encouragement, praise, positive reinforcement and sunflower seed bribing 😂. It was also important that I had his perch close by that he can climb or fly up to if he at any point felt uncomfortable. Feeling “tall” on his stick/perch makes him feel safe and comfortable. I feel like this may be because he feels like he is “higher off the ground” so he is safe from “predators” that would have been lurking about while hunting on the forrest floor- maybe an instinct still engrained in him from his wild birdy ancestors. He will also try and place himself as high off the ground as he can when he flys off with a snack (just my own little theory there!) ✨VIDEO 1✨ As you can see he was still just checking it out and seeing how he felt about it ✨VIDEO 2✨ Confident enough to stick his head and half his body through, but didn’t want to come out through the other end yet ✨VIDEO 3✨ Was confident enough to walk through to the other end!! ✨VIDEO 4✨ Just a cute one of him happy to have leant something new. #instagram #instaeducation #education #learning #bird #birb #vetmed #avian #avianmedicine #veterinarymedicine #vetnurse #instagood #instamood

The laughing dove belongs to the pigeon family (Nerh! They are not doves 🕊). They are found in Africa, Middle East, some parts of India and Western Australia. They have their name because their cry resembles human laughter. 😅 They are seen either alone or in pairs (the single and married ones 😅). The pairing is for life. They typically lay 2 eggs and can use the same nest over and over again till they die. They are found in plantations, gardens and urban areas provided there're trees. Do you know the maintenance fluid therapy rates for birds? Different species have different metabolisms, and so they require different fluid rates. As a rule of thumb, species with higher metabolism will have higher requirements. I get a few questions about if Indian ringnecks are “good birds to have”... My advice is “if you know someone who has this breed, ask them if you can come over and observe them for a day (preferably during sundown/sunset hours when they are particularly vocal). ✨✨✨ Capturing the true sounds of Nacho during his “scream sesh” just doesn’t do it justice over a video, it’s honestly 10x louder in real life. ✨✨✨ As with any breed, have patience and always do your research to know if a bird is the right choice for you AND your family now and in the future. Questa è la storia di Pedro, una giovane Ara ararauna che rischiava di perdere il becco superiore. Caso riferitomi dalle dottoresse Chiara Gambella e Silvia Usai che hanno accompagnato Pedro personalmente dalla Sardegna a Napoli. Questo risultato è frutto del lavoro di squadra di vari professionisti che hanno messo in campo le proprie competenze e strumentazioni pro bono. Poiché Pedro a causa della sua grave lesione veniva abbandonato dai suoi proprietari. Oggi Pedro gode di ottima salute nella sua nuova casa ed ha un becco nuovo di zecca. No me he podido resistir a hacerme una foto con Demetrio. Este gallo ha venido con problemas en las patas producidas por ácaros del género Knemidocoptes. Estos parásitos se localizan principalmente en la epidermis de las patas de las aves de corral produciendo una descamación y queratinización de las patas dándole un aspecto escamoso. La infección se trasmite por contacto directo, cuando las escamas se caen al suelo y son pisadas por otras aves, de esta manera los ácaros acceden a la patas empezando desde los dedos hasta afectar la pasta entera. Una vez diagnosticado el problema se trata desparasitando durante varios ciclos durante unas semanas. Ectopic eggs in Ecletus parrot: This female Ecletus parrot presented for recent nesting and egg laying behaviour that stopped in mid-late December. On her physical examination, her abdomen (coelomic space) was very enlarged, swollen and an egg was palpated. Based on her history and physical exam, this egg had likely been present for 2-3 weeks without being laid (oviposition). Despite attempting medical therapy, she did not pass her egg. We took x-rays at this time and found not one but two eggs! This warrants surgery immediately! She was prepared for exploratory surgery, with the goal of removing the eggs. Upon entry to her abdomen, the eggs were not located in the oviduct as expected, they were free floating. This condition is known as an “Ectopic Egg”. Due to the limited space available, the eggs required collapse of the shell and drainage of the contents (ovocentesis). In the end, she had two whole eggs and part of a third removed from her abdomen. Surgery was necessary because the eggs would not pass on their own. She was given a hormone implant (Suprelorin), to help her stop laying more eggs. A week later, her abdomen had shrunk back down to normal size and her incision had healed nicely. Household Dangers Series: Alternative Materials to “Fleece” Polyester Fabrics ⁠ As we’ve talked about, these types of fabrics are commonly used in the construction of sleeping huts or hammocks, snuggle toys, and toys intended for chewing or preening. They are sometimes used as a soft substrate or a cage cover. In practice I see enough cases of polyester fiber GI foreign bodies, many with devastating consequences, that I don’t think using these fabrics is worth the risk.⁠ ⁠ So, what types of materials are safer alternatives to fleece polyester fabrics?⁠ ⁠ I recommend natural fabrics sourced from plants -- cotton (like the patterned flannel shown in the photo) being the most common example. Other natural materials that can be used are cardboard, paper, wood (including cork), seagrass mats, coconut fiber/husks, bamboo, yucca, and dried corn husks, palm leaves, and banana leaves. These materials are often sold for pet birds to chew, either incorporated into toys or woven into mats, baskets, and other shapes.⁠ ⁠ Disclaimer: Even with natural materials, there remains some risk of ingestion of fibers/particulates and formation of a partially or completely obstructive lump of material. We DO see this from time to time in practice, but it's much less common (or at least much less likely to produce clinical illness) than foreign bodies composed of artificial fibers. Interestingly, we have noticed that these types of materials more commonly collect into a cohesive foreign body in the crop, where they are much easier to diagnose and remove.⁠ ⁠ Aside from the materials they’re made from, there are other hazards posed by sleeping huts and cuddle toys. Анамнез. Волнистый попугай, самец, 8 лет. Лечились в другой клинике, где птицу грамотно не обследовали. И поэтому время, на мой взгляд, упущено. Обратились, когда попугай уже был в тяжёлом состоянии, впервые сделали рентген и сдали помёт на бактериологическое исследование. Рентгенограмма. Пневмония в передней части легких. Мутные воздушные мешки. Повышена плотность печени и одновременно уменьшен ее размер. Желудочки сердца уменьшены. Плотность сердца повышена. Повышена плотность кишечника. Атроз локтевых суставов. Артроз коракоидо-гридинных суставов. Птица по-прежнему в тяжёлом состоянии, стабилизировать пока не удаётся. Какие можно сделать выводы? Когда обращаетесь в клинику, расспрашивайте про анализы, про обследование. Спрашивайте, почему не назначили рентген, если Вы видите в нем необходимость. Почему не назначено микробиологическое исследование помёта. К сожалению, утерянного драгоценного времени иногда не вернуть. #рентген #avianmedicine #волнистыйпопугай

⠀ ⠀Владельцы, когда заболевает птица, сразу начинают искать орнитолога. И сталкиваются с таким моментом, что орнитолог, оказывается, совсем не тот человек, который лечит птиц. ⠀Орнитолог - прежде всего профессия, связанная с изучением птиц, вопросов кольцевания, миграции, физиологии птиц, их поведения. И чаще орнитолога можно встретить в поле, чем в городе. ⠀Например, в других странах ветеринарных врачей, которые лечат птиц, называют avian veterinarian. Птичий доктор, по-нашему, но на русском это звучит, на мой взгляд, немного по-детски. ⠀Поэтому считаю, что в России врачей, которые лечат птиц, правильно называть ветеринарный врач-орнитолог. ⠀Почему это правильно. Потому что очень редко бывает, что врачи-орнитологи занимаются только лишь лечением пернатых. Настоящий профессионал, прежде всего, изучает и основы анатомии, физиологии птиц, и поведение птиц, и вопросы миграции ему тоже, чаще всего, интересны. ⠀А значит, ветеринарный врач-орнитолог - наиболее верная формулировка специализации ветеринарного врача, занимающегося лечением птиц. #орнитолог #ветеринарныйврач #avianmedicine #орнитологспб
