Interior designer Eva Holbrook often walks barefoot through the woods to feel the damp forest floor between her toes, and it’s that grounded feeling she and her partner Jamie Williams emulated when remodeling this wooded retreat in Bonny Doon, California. Swaths of redwood and tak oak finishes, vintage rugs, found objects, and floor cushions are the backdrop to weekly tea ceremonies, and daily life. Engulfed in a lush redwood forest and located just 15 minutes from the beach, the space allows them—and visitors—to “disconnect from civilization, breathe in the fresh air, and rejuvenate on a cellular level,” says Eva. The addition of a yurt with a wood-burning stove and cedar-finished spa amenities make Bonny Doon Forest Temple seriously meditative. If ever a home was “vibes,” it’s this one. After five years of quaint bungalow-style living in Hermosa Beach, California, owners Mardi and Anton Watts were craving more—more space, more amenities, and a general upgrade. The couple turned to @rasa.studio for help, who, after a closer look, determined a renovation wasn’t going to cut it. The firm instead designed this new two-story home with a roof deck, an airy stack of wood-slatted boxes that complements both the area’s low-slung midcentury bungalows and its taller, more recent developments. The challenge, though, laid in making the most of the tight lot while meeting the city’s car-conscious zoning requirements. “How do we get enough space on the ground floor when Hermosa Beach dictates you need a two-car garage,” principal architect Robert Sweet recalls thinking. With a blessing from the city planning department, a mechanical lift was installed to stack one car atop the other, resulting in the illusion—and reality of—more square footage in the downstairs living area. At the foot of a mountain in residential Osaka, Japan, is Melt House, a narrow-set home with a central, double-height courtyard that pivots around an indoor garden. “A home that feels green is a home where the residents actively use the external space and grow together with the green,” says architect Satoshi Saito. “Taking a nap under a tree, planting a tree or flowers, and smelling greenery is less common now in urban societies. I thought that I could create an original experience of this rich life that is being forgotten.” Placed at the home’s center between two wings, the courtyard acts as a multi-functional room that’s a focal point for light and ventilation. Some homebuyers seek out properties that are move-in ready; others love the challenge that comes with a major renovation. San Francisco couple Julie and Kevin Seidel were in the latter camp, transforming this old tire warehouse into a refined residence. “We saw it as a way to stretch ourselves,” recalls Julie. Her husband, a creative director and musician, felt similarly energized by the building’s potential. The renovation was their third project with designer Michael Kao of @makstudioarchitects. He added two stories to the building but brought daylight in with a slender atrium, well-placed windows, and pockets of outdoor space throughout. A monumental metal staircase anchors the entire home vertically, giving it an industrial but surprisingly inviting feel. “It’s been an interesting study in how to work in an urban condition,” says Kao. “We wanted what you might experience in a warehouse with scaffolding and crazy volumes, rather than a traditional house with a grand stair.” Peek inside the dashing home when you try Dwell+ in the link in bio. – Photos by @rbradleyphoto Engineering by @semcoengineering #sanfrancisco #renovation #remodel #convertedwarehouse #loft #loftliving #industrialchic #exterior #interiordesign #moderndesign #modernarchitecture #urbanarchitecture #urbanliving

Frank Lloyd Wright’s school of architecture is closing after 88 years. After educating more than 1,200 architects since Wright established it in 1932, the School of Architecture at Taliesin (SOAT) will close its doors this summer. The school’s Governing Board called the decision to shutter the institution “gut-wrenching.” In a statement, @soataliesin said that it was unable to reach an agreement with the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation to keep the school open. When Tom, an Australian chef, inherited a plot of land in Byron Shire where he grew up, he seized the opportunity to lay down roots and build a home for a future family. Faced with a heavily restricted budget, Tom enlisted the help of Scott Jackson from @studiojacksonscott to create an eco-minded home that embraces outdoor living. Simple, cost-efficient materials helped the team stick to their budget as well as cut down on construction waste and time. “One of the key elements in this particular project that allowed for a more sustainable home was a very simple idea: less is more,” says Jackson.
