At Eternity’s Gate (2018) A creative and beautifully artistic film, but I think that ‘At Eternity’s Gate’ is not a film that will work for everyone: the way it was filmed (the hand held camera is used to show his troubled mind), it’s “boring” , “pretentious” , “disjointed”... Willem Dafoe in the lead role gives an oustanding performance. I have a feeling that this is the perfect portrayal of the tortured genius that was Vincent Van Gogh. The film was beautifully shot, scored and performed. I don’t want to call this film a biographical because this film is something much more than that. . Willem Dafoe: "If you know why you did things, and you're kind of pure in that, you can live with whatever the outcome is. Because you can't control everything, so you can only control your intention, and your good impulse, your degree of engagement. When you're free of the idea of the result, sometimes the engagement can run so much deeper because you're not preoccupied and thinking ahead. You're not getting ahead of yourself. You're doing this for this."
